Primitive Institute of Technology.

CLASSES NOW LISTED FOR 2008!!

Again in 2008, we will be offering a series of workshops and classes about various aspects of Primitive Technology.   These classes are geared to providing hands-on training in areas which will assist in the further education of any student of archaeology or anthropology.

Listed below are the classes we are now offering for the
Summer of 2008.

All classes are a week long (5 days for 4 hours/day) except where noted.   Cost of the class covers all materials and supplies.   Student will receive a certificate upon the successful completion of the class.   All students must 18 years or older.   There are class minimums for the class to be held.   However, all funds will be refunded if a class is canceled.   A few classes have class maximums as noted.   There are currently three seperate dates for the Beginning Flintknapping Class.

Subsequent to signing up, you will receive in the mail a packet of information regarding your class and additional information about lodging and other resources in the campus area.   There is currently no lodging at the campus location itself.

SUMMER 2008 CLASSES


Ethnobotanical Techniques
May 17 - 18, 2008
10 AM to 4 PM


This weekend class will provide an introduction to the various techniques necessary for documenting the ethnobotanical aspects of an archaeological site.   Included will be Interview Techniques, Biogeographical and Survey Techniques, Herbarium Techniques, Background Source Research, and Documentation Methodology.   Behavioral Chain Analysis will be featured as a research technique.   This class has a minimum size of 3.   Class fees will be fully refunded if unfilled.

COST:   $75


Flintknapping I - Introduction to the Basics
June 17 - 21, 2008
1 to 5 PM

This class is for the beginning flintknapper or someone who has only a very minimal of experience.   It covers basic bifacial percussion reduction and pressure reduction techniques.   Warning:   this class will result in you getting cuts and can be potentially even more hazardous.   As part of your class fee you will receive a complete flintknapping tool kit (if you already possess a kit, please contact us for a fee reduction).   Class Fee also covers all Flintknapping materials.   There is no class minimums, but there is a class maximum of 10.   A second class time will be added if this class maximum is reached.

COST:   $350
(Cost includes a complete flintknpping tool kit)


Flintknapping II - Refining Technique and Dealing with Problems
June 24 - 28, 2008
1 PM to 5 PM

This is a continuation class for those who took Flintknapping I or a class for those who have had some flintknapping training but need some additonal tutoring.   We will focus on the most common mistakes and problems encountered while flintknapping.   The class fee covers all flintknapping material costs.   There is no class minimum, but there is a class maximum of 10.

Flintknapping I - Introduction to the Basics

1 to 5 PM

Groundstone Technology
August 15 - 17, 2008
1 to 5 PM

This class will cover the techniques used to produce the other forms of lithic tools, specifically those classified as "groundstones".   A wide variety of such tools will be looked at.   The student will then begin the manufacture of their choice of a groundstone tool  (even though they aren't guaranteed to finish it in the course of the class).   The first day of the class will include a trip to buy and pickup materials.   There is a class minimum of 3 and a class maximum of 10.

COST:   $150
